Ginkgo Biloba Benefits

Ginkgo Biloba trees have been used for years for medicinal purposes. The leaves contain flavonoid, glycosides and terpenoids and were thought to be useful in the treatment of dementia but unfortunately clinical trials have not been able to back up this claim as there is conflicting evidence from clinical trials.

It is often used as a memory aid or concentration enhancer but there are disagreements about the finding of clinical trials in this area as some reported that there were some improvements in memory and others said there was no difference.

Many people still take it for this purpose and find that it has positive effects for them. Despite this lack of evidence for its benefits, it has been found that ginkgo biloba does have certain effects on the body.

It improves the blood flow, protects the body from free radicals and prevents blood clotting too much. It has been tested to see if it can help multiple sclerosis sufferers and has been found to have some positive effects. Because of its blood thinning properties it is probably not suitable for people already taking blood thinning medication or be used by anyone taking antidepressants or pregnant women.

Some people have found that they are allergic to it. It is best to consult a doctor if you are at all unsure about taking it.

It seems like there is still a lot of research which needs to be done in order to draw firm conclusions about the benefits of this tree.
