Herbal Remedies for Headaches

Headaches are quite common and can be caused by many things including dehydration, tiredness, stress, caffeine withdrawal and hormones. There are many medications available for headaches such as paracetamol and ibuprofen which eliminate the pain but do not treat the cause of the problem.

Many people take a lot of them but we are becoming more aware that there are alternative treatments which might be kinder to the body. It is also better to treat the cause of the headaches rather than just the symptoms as it should mean that the treatment will be more effective,  acting more quickly and lasting longer.

Herbs such as feverfew and gingko biloba can help to eliminate the causes of headaches and thus eliminate the pain. Feverfew reduces the severity of migraine but it is not effective on a present headache however when taken regularly has been clinically shown to reduce the frequency of headaches as well as lessening the feelings of sickness which many people get with them.

Ginkgo Biloba is sometimes used to treat migraines as well because it helps increase blood supply to the brain which is felt to be a possible cause of migraine.

If headaches are due to stress then relaxing peppermint oil can be taken to relieve the stress and hopefully reduce the headache. Other herbs helpful for relaxation are chamomile and rosemary and by drinking these in tea can help to destress and prevent the onset of a headache, it could be worth drinking these herb teas regularly just as a prevention if you tend to suffer regularly.
